The Course

The City & Guilds NPTC Level 2 Off Road Driver Training course is a hands on course based in the field and covers the safe operation of off road vehicles both recreationally and commercially.

This course is for someone who works for a commercial company that actively travels off road to access resources, to travel to remote locations or for individuals who want a very structured pre-defined learning outcome.

The course is designed to equip drivers with tools to allow them to operate safer, more efficiently and reducing wear & tear on equipment whilst giving you a tangible qualification at the end of a successful assessment.

WorkSafeBC Occupational Health and Safety Regulations require that employees receive training and demonstrate competency in operating mobile equipment if they are to use that equipment for work means.

Courses are delivered by qualified trainers using material that is applicable to everyone who drives off road.

Class Size

This class operates on a minimum of 2 participants and a maximum of 4 per instructor. Additional instructors can be scheduled for larger groups.

Learning Outcomes

Upon completing this course, you should be able to:

  • State legal and safety requirements relating to the use of off road vehicles.

  • Carry out appropriate pre-start checks on the vehicle.

  • Take appropriate action arising from checks.

  • Prepare for driving off road.

  • Select and wear appropriate PPE as required.

  • Start the vehicle and manoeuvre it safely on rough terrain including slopes.

  • Operate a vehicle mounted winch to remove an obstacle and self recovery a "bogged" vehicle.

  • State the required underpinning knowledge that supports the operations of off road vehicles, winches and trailers.

Course content

  • The vital features of 4x4s and essential maintenance.

  • How to ensure the safety of yourself and others.

  • How to assess slopes and other off road hazards.

  • How to drive safely and get the best from your vehicle in different off road conditions.

Modules

  • Unit 1: Pre-use safety – Off Road vehicles (compulsory).

  • Unit 2: Drive Vehicle in Off Road Conditions (compulsory).

  • Unit 4: Use of Vehicle winches (optional).

Assessment

  • Unit 1: Pre-use safety – Off Road vehicles (compulsory).

  • Unit 2: Drive Vehicle in Off Road Conditions (compulsory).

  • Unit 4: Use of Vehicle winches (optional).

The qualification will be endorsed either:

  • A: Including Winching (must achieve all assessment activities in units 1,2 and 4)

Certification

Participants will receive a certificate of completion for successfully finishing this course.

Duration

Two days, plus half day assessment.

Additional Information

Participants or companies need to provide their own vehicles, ideally those that will be used in the workplace or your regular off road vehicle.

NOTE: Participants must also bring their valid driver's licence and copy of their current driver's abstract.
